A portfolio of 25 photographic prints taken by the Toronto photography company Armstrong, Beere and Hime between November 1856 and spring 1857 for the city of Toronto. The 25 prints were part of a submission by the city in its bid to be named the capital of Canada. The photographs are arranged as a five-part panorama, a four-part panorama, and a three-part panorama. The additional 12 prints are loose. The five-part panorama is an almost 360-degree view of Toronto taken from the top of the Rossin House Hotel at the S. E. corner of King and York Streets, which shows a view from York Street E. to Bay Street. A second four-part panorama from the same viewpoint shows the city from King St. W. to York St. N. A third three-part panorama shows the view south towards the harbour and the railway tracks from Rossin House. A single print formed the last of the total 13-piece panorama. The camera angle was changed between parts 4 and 5, parts 9 and 10, and between parts 12 and 13. In addition to the panorama, there were also single prints showing the following: King Street East in winter, Bank of British North America and stores on Yonge Street, Exchange and Store Wellington Street East, a rooftop study showing a merchant sign for Booth and Son, Painters and Glaziers, Osgoode Hall, Parliament Buildings, part of the Toronto Normal School, Trinity College, and the Wellington Hotel.

Custodial history:

Acquired in two separate lots from a private collector in London, the first through Sothebyès and the second directly from the collector. He had in turn purchased all 25 prints from a house-sale in Belgravia, London.

Citation/reference note:

13 of the photographs (the 5-part, 4-part, and 3-part panoramas, as well as the single print, were published in Lilly Koltun, City Blocks, City Spaces/Éspaces Urbains (Ottawa: Public Archives of Canada, 1981) although the set published was from the Foreign and Commonwealth Library.

Only one other set of these prints exist, in the library of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Records Department, London, England.
