Sub-series consists of records of the Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS) relating to the Beaufort Sea Project, a major environmental assessment project undertaken between 1973 and 1976 to determine the environmental impact of offshore drilling in the Beaufort Sea. Cabinet gave Approval-in-Principal in July 1973, to the granting of Drilling Authorities, formal approval being contingent upon the results of a Regional Environmental Assessment. The Beaufort Sea Project was the name given to the group of forty-six studies from which the Assessment was made.
The sub-series includes draft reports and studies on the effects of drilling on fishes, invertebrates and marine plants, documents surrounding the agreement between the Canadian Government and members of the oil industry regarding exploratory drilling in the Beaufort Sea, and an Overview Report with correspondence of Beaufort Sea production.
