Fonds consists of photographic material the bulk of which consists of commercial and industrial photographs taken by Richard Arless and his two sons Richard Jr. and Allan depicting such subjects as: Trans-Canada Air Lines; Timmins Aviation; fashion; Murray Hill; Bell Telephone; Dominion Textiles; Colonial Air Lines; C.I.L.; McKim Advertising; I.A.T.A.; Canadair; Sabena; RCA Victor; Chemcell Textiles; Standard Brands Trans-Canada Sales Office; Canada Steamship Lines. Also included are portrait and aerial photographs as well as depictions of the Point St. Charles district of Montreal, Quebec, 25 April 1946.
- Biography/Administrative history:
Arless, Richard, Sr., 1906-1995 : Richard Graham Arless, photographer. Richard Arless was born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1906. Like his father and grandfather before him, Arless worked as a professional phorographer for more than 50 years. Arless first gained distinction as a military photographer during World War II as a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve. Dispatched overseas to the photography department in London, England, Arless was with Canadian troops when they landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. During the course of his career, Arless worked for several English and French language newspapers and magazines. He also opened his own commercial studio in Montreal. In the early 1930's, Arless married Evelyn Allen. They had four children. Richard Arless died at St. Anne's Veteran's Hospital on October 28, 1995.
