As a result of a serious loss of shipping tonnage during the First World War, the Canadian government established its own merchant fleet in 1918. The Canadian Government Merchant Marine, Limited, placed orders for 63 cargo vessels. The first ship, the Canadian Voyageur, sailed on her maiden voyage in February 1919. Throughout its operations, however, the government ships had difficulty in competing against commercial shipping. From 1923-1931, twenty-nine ships were sold off and disposed of. Despite a 1931 report by the Select Standing Committee on Railways and Shipping calling for the abandonment of the CGMM, reduced operations continued until 1936 when Order-in-Council 1026, 27 April 1936, disbanded the company.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the sub-series.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG12-A-1 -
