York, Isabel, 1903-1997 : Born on 27 December 1903 in Tuckersmith township, in Huron County, Ontario, Isabel Souter was the daughter of Alexander Souter and Janet Elizabeth Ramsay. She attended Seaforth Collegiate and received the first Carter scholarship in mathematics to study at the University of Toronto in 1922. After teaching school in Huron County for a few years, she went to northern Ontario in 1926 to teach in the communities of Sioux Lookout and Red Lake. She returned to southern Ontario in 1931 to be principal of the Continuation School in Flinton, married Alexander York in Tweed in 1932 and had two daughters Meryl and Shirley. She returned to teaching around 1935 and continued on an irregular basis until 1970. During this time, she and her family lived in a number of places in Ontario, including Flinton, Dundas, Toronto, Toledo, Perth, Morrisburg and finally Ottawa, where she died on 19 April 1997.
