Canada. Canadian Army. Canadian Railway Troops. Battalion, 6th : The 228th Battalion, predecessor of the 6th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops (CRT), was organized in March 1916 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel A. Earchman. Its authorization was published in General Order 69 of 15 July 1916. The battalion mobilized at North Bay and recruited in Northern Ontario.

The battalion embarked from Canada 17 February 1917 aboard MISSANABIE, disembarking in England on 27 February 1917. Its strength was 31 officers and 756 other ranks. The 228th Battalion was redesignated the 6th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops on 8 March 1917 (P.C. 2331 of 5 September 1918). Its authorization was published in General Order 63 of 15 June 1917. The battalion arrived in France on 2 April and 2 May 1917. The battalion demobilized at London, Ontario and was disbanded by General Order 196 of 1 November 1920. The 6th Battalion CRT was perpetuated by The Algonquin Regiment.

The battalion colours were presented on 8 July 1916 by Mrs. A.J. Young of North Bay and were deposited in Potter's Bar Parish Church London, England for the duration of the war. They were deposited in North Bay Collegiate Institute on 11 November 1919.
