Sub-series is comprised of two blocks: records (vols. 309 - 316) arranged according to the EMR subject-number file code used with the correspondence in the previous sub-series (vols. 309 - 316) and records, mostly reports and studies, arranged alphabetically by title (vols. 316 - 323). This sub-series contains records used to brief the Minister for events and meetings about issues such as the protection of energy supplies, oil and gas price controls, gas export limits, energy conservation, and the development and the management of new energy resources. Some briefing material dates from before Gillespie was minister. Some of the reports and policy records appear to have been held as reference. This sub-series documents policy, cabinet discussions, and decisions on federal-provincial energy agreements, energy jurisdiction and ownership, natural gas pricing, new energy conservation programmes, national energy policy, and energy legislation.
Records documenting the exploration and development of the Beaufort Sea are in volume 312. They include memoranda to cabinet, discussion papers of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, position papers on Inuvialuit land claims, financial compensation, and related rights, discussions about the possibility of environmental damage from exploratory drilling, and views from oil companies. Other records in this sub-series deal with renewable energy resources (vol. 311), Energy Ministers' Conferences and meetings (vol. 319), and off-shore development and jurisdiction. Some records document energy policy meetings and discussions between the federal government and National Advisory Committees - special committees made up of private sector representatives from banks, oil companies, mining companies, and non-governmental organizations (vols. 320 - 321). Uranium refining and uranium sales, northern gas pipelines and Arctic development are also documented in the sub-series.
