This series consists of correspondence [Green], reference [Blue] and NDP position [Red] files.

The Abortion Series comprises files dealing with the Anti-Choice movement, adoption, access to services, Canadian Abortion Rights League, Bill C-43, speeches, House votes, the Canada Health Act, family planning, new reproductive technology, the pro-Choice movement, the Royal Commission on Reproductive Technology, Ru-486 (a French anti-pregnancy drug), Senate Committee, Supreme Court cases regarding abortion, tax status and various anti- and pro-movements in the US and internationally.

This series provides an extraordinarily detailed source for researchers interested in this subject. It also holds material which reveals the political workings of the House. For example, the 13 files on Bill C-43 (which Black opposed because it was deficient in recognizing women's rights and assuring their safety re: abortion) detail the background drama of stopping this bill and Black's (and the NDP's) clear positions on this matter; they hold press reports and correspondence which comment on the political significance of this bill, and reveal the politicking amongst parties on this divisive issue.
