The postal cover is a First Day Cover (FDC) bearing a cachet for the Canada sports series issued 7 March 1957 (Scott nos. 365-368). The textual documents include a 260 p. typescript, entitled Opening and closing dates of Canadian post offices, researched and written by Frank W. Campbell, as well as a price list (5 p.), which covers Canadian postal stationery and was prepared by Nelson Bond, an American stamp dealer from Roanoke, Va. Finally, the album comprises 7 p. of philatelic ephemera regarding the portrait of Queen Victoria, by Alfred Edward Chalon, including an information page (researched by Colin H. Bayley), three commercial reproductions of the piece, two souvenir panes (each containing four labels, printed by Perkins Bacon Ltd.), and a leaf of stationery containing an embossed Canadian coat-of-arms upon which is mounted an example of the Perkins Bacon Ltd. label, in deep blue.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Mitchener, Ralph D. (Ralph Donald), 1926- : Ralph D. Mitchener was born in 1926 in Fort Garry, Man. He attended the University of Manitoba, the University of Toronto, Carleton University, and New York University, studying sociology, education and geography. He lived in Ottawa from 1951, working in the civil service for 35 years before retiring in 1986. Mitchener died in 1995. Ralph D. Mitchener was a philatelist of note in Canada, but particularly in the Ottawa Valley. He was past President of the Ottawa RA Stamp Club and the Ottawa Philatelic Society, and from 1983 he wrote a column in the Ottawa Citizen on stamps and stamp collecting. His interests were broad, ranging from the stamps of Ethiopia to a topical interest in hockey stamps. Mitchener was also a member of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC), the British North America Philatelic Society, the Postal History Society of Canada, la Fédération Québécoise de Philatélie, la Société d'histoire postale du Québec, and the Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada.
