Series consists of records acquired from the Program Reference Centre and from the Treaties and Historical Research Centre in three separate transfers. The contents of volumes 11398-11399 were acquired through the first transfer, in 1977, from the Genealogical and Archival Research Unit of the Program Reference Centre. The records found in volumes 11189-11217, 11396, and 11400-11401 were acquired in 1978 in a single transfer that included records from both the Program Reference Centre and the Treaties and Historical Research Centre. It is not now possible to identify which records originated in which of the two offices. The records in volume 11397 were acquired in a separate transfer from the Program Reference Centre in 1981-82.
Many of the reference tools in this series were originally maintained by the Department of Indian Affairs records office and were the creations of the Department's registrar-cum-archivist, George M. Matheson, who headed the departmental records operation from 1898 to 1936. The series is comprised of an eclectic collection of diverse reference tools and miscellaneous records, collected and used (but not created) by staff of one or the other of the two offices, to assist in answering inquiries.
Indian and Inuit Affairs Program (Canada). Program Reference Centre : Under the Program Services Directorate, the Program Reference Centre acted as a program repository for the collection and dissemination of statistical, genealogical, and related historical information pertaining to the cultural, social, and economic life of Indian people. As well as being a repository for published and unpublished reference material, the Centre also housed the departmental microform copy reference collection of paylists within its Genealogical and Archival Research Unit. The Program Reference Centre ceased to exist as such c.1985-86 and its remaining holdings were dispersed, some going to the Department Library, some to the Research Branch. The Genealogical and Archival Research Unit, along with the microform copies of paylists, was transferred to the Membership and Entitlement Directorate of the Lands, Revenues and Trusts Sector.
During the time period in which the records in this series were acquired, the Treaties and Historical Research Centre, under the Research Directorate, provided research services to persons working on behalf of Native organizations, academics, and the general public. The Centre also provided historical background for current policies and issues and advisory and liaison services to departmental officials on matters pertaining to fulfilment of the government's lawful obligations to Indian people. The office became known as the Claims and Historical Research Centre c.1991-92. RG10
