1 button.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:The textual records consist of correspondence, project files, manuscripts and printed material documenting the career of Grant Munro and that of his friend and colleague, Norman McLaren; also included is some personal material relating to Norman McLaren. The art material consists of greeting cards made by Munro and received by Munro from McLaren and Evelyn Lambart; drawings by Munro, McLaren, and René Jodoin; original and reproduced film posters; sketchbooks kept by Munro; medals and a button given to Munro; a woodcut print by Laurence Hyde; and a publication "The drawings of/les dessin de Norman McLaren" (Montreal: Tundra Books, 1975). The photographs include material covering Grant Munro's career from 1943 until 1995.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Munro, Grant, 1923-2017 : Grant Munro was born in Winnipeg in 1923 and studied at the Winnipeg School of Art. He went to Toronto to continue his studies at the Ontario College of Art, and there his teacher Frank Carmichael introduced him to Norman McLaren, who had been asked by the National Film Board to establish an animation department and who sought to recruit talent from Canada's art schools. In 1944, Munro joined the National Film Board, where he was to remain for the rest of his filmmaking career, except for brief periods when he sojourned in Mexico designing silver jewelry under the tutelage of William Spratling around 1947-1948, was employed by Crawley Films 1948-1950, and worked with George Dunning in London at TV Cartoons Ltd. 1957-1960. In 1970, Munro was lent by the National Film Board to the Cuban Film Board for several months, to advise it on its animation department.
At the National Film Board, Grant Munro's career was largely spent in animation, collaborating with Norman McLaren on the famous short film "Neighbours" (1952), in which he appeared as an actor. Other collaborations with McLaren include "Two Bagatelles" (1953) and "Canon" (1964). He co-animated Stephen Leacock's "My Financial Career" with Gerald Potterton in 1962 and produced, animated and directed "Toys", an anti-war film, in 1966. He made non-animation films as well, including the anti-smoking "Ashes of Doom", in which he played Dracula. Munro shared McLaren's interest in ballet and he made a documentary on the Canadian dancers Anne-Marie and David Holmes, "Tour en l'Air" (1973), and planned another on the choreographer Bronislava Nijinska, which was never made.
