Canada. Alachlor Review Board : On February 5, 1985 the federal Minister of Agriculture cancelled the registration of all alachlor products in Canada, after determining that their use posed unacceptable health and environmental risks. Under the provisions of section 23 of the Pest Control Products Act R.S.C. 1970, c. p-10, Monsanto Canada Inc., the manufacturer of alachlor, was entitled to a review of the minister's decision. Therefore, the Minister of Agriculture appointed a review board on November 13, 1985. The purpose of the Alachlor Review Board was to examine evidence regarding the risks, costs, efficiency and benefits of alachlor products. The board, which held its first hearing on December 5, 1985, assessed the evidence presented and made recommendations to the Minister of Agriculture. During the 41 days of public hearings, the board received evidence from 53 witnesses. The final report of the board was submitted to the Minister of Agriculture on November 13, 1987.
