Sub-sub-series consists of a continuation of the registered correspondence described in RG43-A-I-1, MIKAN #137044. The branch continued to register all correspondence until 1906, although in 1901 a numeric subject file system was adopted. These records relate to all aspects of government involvement with railway development in Canada, and include documentation relating to the creation of the CNR. Also included are files created by the Railway Branch when it was part of the Department of Public Works, 1867-1879, as well as files created by the branch between 1879 and 1930, including claim files and railway equipment files (Vols. 2884-2888). Vols. 697-698 consists of some unnumbered subject files, loose correspondence and documents.

Vol. 2884 contains a 1914 map of the Fort Liam/William and Port Arthur area (later Thunder Bay). The map was extract from Vol. 442, file 12094 (12.094) due to a digitization request. The map underwent conservation treatment to flatten and stabilize it before digitization. Because the map was flattened, it has been re-containerized and assigned a new volume number (2884). Finding aid 43-50 includes a detailed description of the item. See MIKAN 1296655 for the originating file (12094) and volume (442).

(Electronic) Finding aid 43-50 is a computer generated list. By 1936 a massive card index to these records had been created and is available as a finding aid in the Government Archives Division. The files are indexed by name of railway, by geographical location, and by persons and firms. Not all of the files indexed still exist in this sub-sub-series, but those that do have been listed. 43-50 also includes a listing of the contents for Vol. 2884. 43-50 (90: Open)
