Series consists of records maintained in the headquarters central registry of Parks Canada and its predecessors. Parks Canada has used a number of different file classification systems in its headquarters in Ottawa since its establishment as a branch of the Department of the Interior in 1873. Until the establishment of the Dominion Parks Branch in 1911, the Department of the Interior's system was used. In 1911, a separate central registry system was introduced. This system remained in use until the mid-1960s, despite the responsibility for the National Parks shifting frequently among government departments. For a brief time in the 1950s, a new file classification system was introduced and then shortly abandoned after proving unpopular. The Parks branch was reorganized in the mid-1960s and a new file classification system was introduced. In the 1970s, a block-numeric file classification system was put into use. This series is arranged into sub-series that reflect the evolution of the headquarters central registry.
