Sub-series consists of registry files maintained in the Deputy Minister's Office registry system first introduced in 1936. In the early 1950's a duplex block-numeric classification system was introduced for all Deputy Minister files, certain Northern program and administration information as well as National Parks and Historic Sites material. Records contained therein dealt covered a period from 1867 to 1971 although the bulk of this material dates from 1940's to 1971. Information was filed in accordance with the classification system : 20 - Administration Branch; 21 - Information Services Division; 22 - Personnel Division; 23 - Material and Supply Division; 24 - Legal Advisor's Office; 25 - Economic Advisor's Office; 26 - Organization and Methods; 27 - Computer Information Systems; 28 - Manpower Budgeting; 40 - Northern Administration; 51 - Power; 65 - Winter Works; 66 - Federal-Provincial Recreational Parks Program; 71 - Roads; 81 - United Nations; 82 - Foreign Countries; 83 - Province; 84 - Government Departments, Boards, Commissions; 85 - Cabinet - Privy Council; 86 - House of Commons - Senate; 87 - Miscellaneous Committees; 88 - Minister's Office; 89 - Universities; 90 - Maps; 98 - Management Group Services; 99 - Miscellaneous Subjects; 100 - Signing Authority; 230 - Land Division; 250 - Settlements (57 individual northern communities arranged by location code); 300 - National Parks (general files within 300 block and specific park files by individual file number from 301 to 319); 320 - Provincial Parks; 325 - International Parks; 330 - Proposed Parks; 350 - National Historic Sites - Policy; 351 - Historic Sites and Monuments Board; 352 to 363 - Historic Sites (by Province and territories); 370 - Wildlife; 380 - Birds Sanctuaries (by province).
The activities of the department were divided into a series of broad categories, the current equivalents of which are now administered within the present departmental structure at the program level or by other federal departments and agencies. The Deputy Minister's classification manual spanned the entire department. For the researcher it offers insight into the complexity of all subjects dealt with by Indian and Northern Affairs. A copy of the file classification manual created by the department is also available for consultation. See the archivist.
In 1971 this registry system was closed and the information split between the five records offices of the individual programs. As part of the overall upgrading of the records management a new four-digit duplex numeric classification system introduced.
Volumes 1410-1412 are documents related to arctic sovereignty that include various reports, including reports filed in the Deputy Minister's registry files. - Finding aid:
