Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Office of the Commissioner : George A. French was appointed the first Commissioner (P.C. 1397, 22 October 1873). During the period 1882-1920, the Commissioner directed operations of the Force from a regional headquarters in the west and reported in detail on all aspects of its operations to the Comptroller. An Act to amend the Royal Northwest Mounted Police Act was passed and assented to 10 November 1919. This Act provided for the appointment of a Commissioner of Police (10 Geo. V, c.28). In 1923, all statutory or other powers previously vested in the Commissioner of the Dominion Police were transferred to the Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (P.C. 436, 10 March 1923). The Commissioner was designated a deputy head under the provisions of the Public Service Employment Act (14-15- 16 Eliz. II, c.71; P.C. 1898, 5 October 1967). RG18 General Inventory
