Sub-series consists of registers and indexes which serve as a finding aid for the despatches sub-series (RG2-A-2-a), and certain of the orders in council in minutes, annexes and reports sub-series (RG2-A-1-a). Included in this sub-series are the indexed registers of despatches referred to the Privy Council. The entries indicate the source of the despatch, date received, date of the minute of council, and the action taken.

Some despatches were considered and passed by the Council as orders or minutes of council, and although still registered with the despatches they were filed with the Orders in Council according to the date of approval.

To order a despatch first determine the despatch number and date of receipt, then obtain a series volume number through the use of a conversion list found with the finding aids. In cases where an approval date is also available (indicating that the despatch has become an order in council) the documents may be viewed by ordering them as RG 2, Series A-1-a, plus the date of approval. Since the Despatches were given an alphanumeric designation for each period of several years, those converted to orders in council have retained their alpha-numeric identification. (ie. 342A of May 24, 1868).
