Canada. Canadian Army. Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery. Locating Battery, 1 : In 1954, the 1st Locating Battery was reinstated at Shilo as part of the Divisional Artillery, RCHA. Its role was to locate enemy artillery by identifying flash-spots and employing sound-ranging techniques in order to bring effective counter-battery fire upon them. The Divisional Locating Battery was reduced to nil strength on 30 April 1958 and its functions were de-centralized to the Brigade Group level, where each had a Regimental Locating Battery. After the Brigade level Locating Batteries were disbanded, 1st Locating Battery, RCA was reformed on 23 April 1965 as an independent unit. The battery consisted of a survey troop, sound-ranging troop, radar troop, meteorological troop, two drone troops, and was stationed at Fort Osbourne Barracks, Winnipeg. Its mandate was to conduct drone and sound-ranging trials in conjunction with the National Research Council and other specialized British, German and American artillery units. The completion of these trials resulted in the disbandment of the unit in July 1968, with its personnel becoming 1 Drone Troop. (G.W.L. Nicholson, The Gunners of Canada Volume II, pp.591,593.)
