Collection consists of transcript copies of correspondence and records which relate to John Butler and Butler's Rangers, 1710-1977, as compiled by William A. Smy from sources in Canada, the United States and England. Included are correspondence relating to John Butler's service with the British Indian Department and to the formation and activities of Butler's Rangers during the American Revolution, with muster rolls, pay lists and accounts of the Corps. The full source citation of each document is given. To facilitate the search and retrieval of specific information, a machine-readable version (WordPerfect 5.1) of the project is available.

Smy, William A : Lieutenant-Colonel William A. Smy (1938-), historian, is a former Commanding Officer of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, which traces its history to the men and traditions of Butler's Rangers. He has devoted many years to the recovery of documents and papers which relate to John Butler and his Corps of Rangers, the originals of which are believed to have been destroyed in the fire that burned much of Niagara-on-the-Lake during the War of 1812. Compiled from a variety of sources in Canada, the United States and England, the Butler Papers represent the most comprehensive collection of known correspondence and records pertaining to John Butler and Butler's Rangers.
