Fonds consists of a series of 360 databases of polls preserved in a standard electronic format. Each database represents one poll from 1945 to 1991. They contain codes of questions and answers used by the Canadian Institute of Public Opinion to produce publications. Codebooks on paper and in electronic format are also available for each poll. These codebooks describe in detail the questions and answers and provide the definition of codes in each database. One file (container 358) is related to paper textual documents regarding interview questionnaires for the years 1988 and 1990.

To measure public opinion, the Institute applies a scientific sampling process, to ensure that all types and groups of the population are represented in its sample in their true proportion. These polls are unique in that they are the longest-running continuous series of polls taken in Canada, spanning more than forty years and forming a continuous time-series. The Gallup "Omnibus" Polls offer a wide variety of themes as they never focus on one specific subject. The main topics of the polls relate to elections and cultural, economic and social issues. This unique documentation is a valuable source of the opinions, feelings and culture of Canadians and their evolution through the four decades.

Canadian Institute of Public Opinion : The Canadian Gallup Poll was founded in 1941 under the name of the Canadian Institute of Public Opinion (CIPO). The impetus for its formation came from a group of Canadian journalists who had followed with interest the work of Dr. George Gallup in the United States. Dr. Gallup had broken new ground in the mid-thirties through the application of scientific sampling methods to the measurement of public opinion and attitudes.

CIPO published its first Gallup public opinion poll in Canadian daily newspapers on December 2 1941. Since that date Gallup Poll findings have been published, without interruption, at least twice weekly, in leading daily newspapers across the country. The Institute's principal objective is the publication of scientifically-produced survey information on the opinions, attitudes and behaviour of Canadians with respect to social, political, cultural and economic issues.

The Canadian Institute of Public Opinion, or Gallup Poll of Canada Inc., is a commercial fact-finding organization, whose only purpose is to measure and report, through its member newspapers, public sentiment on issues of the day. It has no connection with any government or political party.

General note:

Documents acquired under the terms of an agreement with the CIPO through contract processing with Carleton University. Polls dated before 1989 were acquired by the Government Archives Division, starting in 1983 and were transferred to the Manuscript Division in 1990. Polls dated after 1988 were acquired by the Manuscript Division in 1992 and 1993.
Raw data for 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1952 was destroyed by Gallup Canada Inc., prior to the National Archives' acquisition of this material.
Most of reports published by the Canadian Institute of Public Opinion are available at the National Library of Canada.
