Records of the British military forces in North America consisting of the official correspondence and papers of the Military Secretary of the Commander of the Forces, 1767-1870, the official records of the Canada and Nova Scotia Commands, 1785-1883 and 1762-1899 respectively, and miscellaneous military records, 1757-1896, these latter mostly from private sources.

Cartographic material comprised of the following accessions: RG8M 80103/37 consists of consists of property listings and drawings of military holdings vested in the Secretary of State for War, in the cities of Montreal and Quebec, by the Royal Engineer Canada Command; RG8M 84503/34 consists of plans, indexes and statements of property vested in the Secretary of State for War in Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island within the Royal Engineer Command, prepared by the Royal Engineers.

British Military and Naval Records. "C" Series : The "C" Series consists of 2020 volumes of records accumulated by the British forces stationed in Canada from 1759 until 1906, as well as sundry military records attached to this series for the convenience of researchers. The origins of the Series and the arrangement of volumes within it are described in the Introduction to the Preliminary Inventory (see FA 1800). Note: This inventory is not intended to supersede the more detailed Preliminary Inventory to Record Group 8, British Military and Naval Records, or E. Cruikshank's Inventory to the Military Documents in the Canadian Archives.

Textual records (Electronic) Finding Aid 1800 has four parts. First is the Preliminary Inventory to Record Group 8, British Military and Naval Records, as published in 1954, supplemented by typescript lists of additions to 1977. Second is a conversion list which correlates the "C" Series volume numbers with the microfilm reel numbers (also prefixed "C"). Third is a copy of E. Cruikshank's Inventory to the Military Documents in the Canadian Archives, published in 1910, with annotations of volumes added to the series or transferred to RGs 7 and 9 on creation of the Record Groups. Fourth is the nominal and subject card index to the subject files within the correspondence of the Military Secretary (series I A), and to portions of the Miscellaneous Records (series I D).

RG8M 80103/37: Textual records: Document has annotations. Cartographic material: Some items are signed: Charles E. Ford, Colonel, Comp. Royal Engineers in Canada.

RG8M 84503/34: Cartographic material - Most items have holes punched along one side. Most items are signed by R.J. Stotherd, Col., Commander Royal Engineers or by Richard Warren, Capt., Royal Engineers. Textual records: Items #40 and 41 are signed: R. Burnaby, Col., Commanding Royal Engineers.

Note on the state of conservation:

RG8M 80103/37: Cartographic material - all of the items have a heavy paper strip adhering to one side.

Custodial history:

Provenance of the cartographic material (RG8M 80103/37 and RG8M 84503/34) is uncertain. The material has been in the National Map Collection for many years.
