In 1926 the Earl of Dartmouth presented virtually all papers considered to be of Canadian interest to the National Archives. The remainder of the family's papers were deposited in the William Salt Library at Stafford and later at the Staffordshire County Record Office., Transcription of the Dartmouth papers began in 1895, when Douglas Brymner copied selections according to the 1895 calender by the Historical Manuscripts Commission. Further transcripts were made from this calendared series in 1907. Between 1918 and 1921 transcripts were made from the first series of originals, then at Patshull House, Wolverhampton, according to the HMC calender of 1887.

The papers are grouped roughly by geographical area, then arranged chronologically. The subject groupings are inexact and tend to overlap boundaries; there are two chronological sequences for some of the subject groups. The early settlement of New Brunswick is covered under the heading of "Nova Scotia".
