Colonial Office 42, which for Canada is the first of the six classes normally assigned to geographically defined collections, follows the usual system of arrangement for "colony" classes. The internal distribution of documents in CO 42 reflects the geo-political development of Canada in the five distinct units of records: Quebec, 1763-1791 (volumes 1-88); Lower Canada, 1791-1840 (volumes 89-315); Upper Canada, 1791-1841 (volumes 316-476); Province of Canada, 1841-1866 (volumes 477-661); Dominion of Canada, 1867-1922 (volumes 662-1045). CO 42 consists of correspondence and enclosures from the governors, lieutenant-governors, and administrators of Quebec, Lower Canada, Upper Canada, the Province of Canada and the Dominion of Canada, 1700-1922. The "Q" Series consists of transcripts of this material for the years 1760-1841, but without the marginal notes.

Additional records similar to those in CO 42 may be located in CO 537, Original Correspondence, Supplementary., Duplicate despatches, 1771-1847, from British officials in North America to the Colonial Office and its precursors, as well as other government departments, are available. Identified as contemporary duplicates, some of the early despatches appear to be the originals as drafted and signed by the colonial officers and sent to London. Received as 59 volumes from the Colonial Office in 1909, and located in MG 40 A2.
