Macbeth, Madge, 1878-1965 : Madge Macbeth, née Madge Hamilton Lyons, was born in Philadelphia and educated at Hellmuth College, London, Ont. After a brief career as a mandolinist and vaudeville actress in the United States, she married Charles Macbeth in 1901 and moved to Ottawa in 1904. Widowed a few years later, Madge Macbeth turned to journalism and writing for a living. Her first novel, The Changeling, was published in 1909, followed by the Winning Game (1910) and Keath (1917). Other novels included The Patterson Limit (1923), Shackles (1926) and The Great Fright, Onesiphore, Our Neighbour (1929). The Land of Afternoon (1924) and The Kinder Bees (1935) were both published using the pseudonym Gilbert Knox. Macbeth was also the author of the travel book, Over the Gangplank to Spain (1931), and two autobiographical works, Over My Shoulder (1953) and Boulevard Career (1957). A prolific writer (who also used the pseudonym W.S. Dill), her articles appeared in Saturday Night, Macleans, the Ottawa Citizen, the Winnipeg Free Press, and the Toronto Star Weekly. Macbeth also wrote for radio, the stage and film. She was, at various times, president of the Ottawa Drama League, the Ottawa Women's Press Club and the Canadian Authors Association.

General Note:

Most of the textual records were received from Madge Macbeth in 1958. The personal diary 1938-1945 was received from A.E.H. Petrie in 1970. The manuscripts of The Humble Beasts Who Served, etc., were transferred from the Public Records Division in 1975. The manuscript of The Little Martyr and the travel diary 1933 were transferred from the holdings of the National Library in 1982 and 1985.

Original extent note:

The extent of the textual records was originally 1.65 m, but re-filing and the use of mylar and interleaving as a conservation measure has resulted in an increased extent.
