Fonds consists of articles, papers and speeches relating to surveying, cartography and geography, 1889-1946.
The fonds also contains photographs relating to a variety of subjects. There are two photograph albums by Captain James Peters, Frederic Peter's father, relating to his career as an officer in the British Military, including his participation in: Operations of ""A'' Battery, Regiment of Canadian Artillery, during the Northwest Rebellion actions at Fish Creek and Batoche, N.W.T., April-June 1885; activities of ""C'' Battery, Regiment of Canadian Artillery on the Skeena and Cowichan Rivers, B.C., 1887; military activities at Quebec, Quebec, and Kingston, Ont., 1884-1885; hunting and fishing in Quebec, New Brunswick, Ontario and British Columbia, 1884-1888. Fonds consists of technical drawings, tables, diagrms and a chart pertaining to the construction of canals (and some specifically to the Milk River and St. Mary River irrigation scheme in southern Alberta).
Peters, Frederic Hatheway, b. 1883 : Frederic H. Peters, public servant, was born in Quebec. He graduated from the Royal Military College, Kingston in 1904, and became a Dominion land surveyor in 1910 and an Alberta land surveyor in 1911. He served as Chief Engineer of Irrigation at the Department of Works in Calgary from 1911 to 1923. From 1924 to 1948 he was Surveyor-General of Canada, and during this period he also served as the Chief of Hydrographic and Map Services.
