Fonds consists of letters written by H.S. Duggan to members of his family from British Columbia, 1910; Mainz, Germany, 1913-1914; England and France, 1914-1915; certificates relating to his work at Mainz; commission, field message book, instructional material, field almanac and memorial scroll relating to his service with the Royal Engineers, 1914-1915. Also included: correspondence, reports and clippings concerning his death in action, 1915-1929.
The fonds also contains portraits of Herrick S. Duggan as a university graduate, 1912, and military officer, 1915; ten aerial reconnaissance photos of France, 1916.
Included in the fonds are 3 medals, ca. 1914-1918, awarded to Herrick Stevenson Duggan: 1914-1915 Star; WWI British War Medal; WWI British Victory Medal; a WWI Next-Of-Kin Memorial Plaque, ca. 1914-1918; and a Royal Engineers Military Tunic Button, ca. 1914-1918.
Duggan, Herrick Stevenson, 1891-1915 : Herrick Duggan, military officer, engineer, was the elder son of G.H. Duggan, a noted Montreal engineer. He graduated from McGill University in Mechanical Engineering, 1912, and worked as an engineer for Dominion Bridge Co., 1912-1913, and for Machinen-Fabrick Augsburg-Nurnberg in Mainz, Germany, 1913-1914. He joined the Royal Engineers in 1914 and was sent to France as a lieutenant with the 70th Field Company in May 1915. He was killed in October 1915.
