Fonds consists of four letters and two memoranda relating to the defence of British North America and Sir William Fenwick Williams' career. Sir William viewed the American Civil War with concern, and urged the stationing of more British troops in Canada.

Williams, William Fenwick, 1800-1883 : Sir William Fenwick Williams, soldier and colonial administrator, was a native of Annapolis Royal and sometimes said to be the son of the Duke of Kent. Commissioned in the Royal Artillery in 1825, he saw service in European and Asian Stations, including the defence of Kars during the Crimean War. In 1859, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in North America, and subsequently Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia, 1865-1867. In the later part of his career, he held posts of Governor and Commander-in-Chief at Gibraltar, 1870-1876, and Constable of the Tower of London, 1881-1883.
