Nova Scotia. Settlement and Defence : Under the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, England received Nova Scotia. But, the English showed little interest in it until 1749. Until then the only English settlers had been a few soldiers and merchants. The English finally backed up their claim to Nova Scotia by sending two thousand five hundred settlers to found the town of Halifax in 1749. The English also brought Swiss and Germans to Nova Scotia in the 1750s. Canadian Encylopedia.
