Graves, Thomas Graves, 1725-1802 : Thomas Graves, first Baron attained the rank of lieutenant in the Royal Navy by 1743 and captain in 1755. He was commander of the Newfoundland station, 1761-1763, and commander of a squadron in North American waters, 1780-1782. He was promoted vice-admiral in 1787 and admiral in 1794.
