American Broadcasting CompanyDescription:Compilation of American radio and/or television news reports about the October crisis.~The items from October 19, 1970 are as follows:~Excerpt of the CBS Morning News, including reports on the search by police for Marc Carbonneau and Paul Rose, suspects in the murder of Pierre Laporte and the request by the Canadian government to American police to be on the look out for cars with Québec license plates in case the kidnappers are trying to escape to the United States. Correspondent David [Culhane] reports from Montreal on the death of Pierre Laporte, the crowds gathering to view the body which is laying in state, and clips by Pierre Elliott Trudeau, John Diefenbaker and Jean Drapeau about Laporte. Drapeau's voice cracks as he speaks. Trudeau's remark that the kidnappers will fail to shake the will of the country is also mentioned.~NBC news reports on developments in the October crisis, including the publication by Montreal police the day before of a letter in the handwriting of FLQ hostage James Cross, the television broadcast by Pierre Elliott Trudeau about the death of Laporte, the arrest by Montreal police of two men in St. Hubert, the issuing of a warrant for the arrest of Marc Carbonneau and a man identified by the announcer as Paul "Ross", and the arrest by soldiers of two men caught trying to blow up the CBC transmitter on Mount Royal. The reporters are identified as Frank [Blair] and Paul Cunningham.~Excerpts of news reports about the laying in state of the body of Pierre Laporte, interviews with people in Montreal about their reaction to the murder, and a clip of the televised statement by Pierre Elliott Trudeau about the murder. The reporter is identified as Paul Cunningham of NBC, who is reporting from Montreal. The host is Hugh Downs. René Lévesque is interviewed and is irritated by the interviewer's attempt to equate the Parti Québécois with sympathy among the party's voters for the terrorists (these clips are probably audio recordings of part of the NBC television program Today).~Report on the death of Pierre Laporte, the grief it has generated and the televised statement by Pierre Elliott Trudeau about Laporte's death. There is a clip of Trudeau.~Report by Dick [Kay] of NBC News on a rally in Vancouver by members of the Vancouver Liberation Front, a group of French-Canadians protesting government over-reaction to the October crisis.~Last part of a commentary by Howard K. Smith about the lack of clear purpose of terrorists around the world, including Québec. He speculates that the terrorists do what they do to get publicity and to inspire fear. This is probably from the ABC Evening News television program, anchored by Frank Reynolds. The commentator is identified on the tape only as Howard, but Frank Reynolds' name is mentioned.~Report by ABC correspondent Scott [Osborne] about developments in the FLQ crisis, including the statement by Robert Stanfield in support of the government's refusal to capitulate to the terrorists, the vote in Parliament on the War Measures Act and the search by police of the house in St. Hubert where Pierre Laporte was believed to have been held hostage before his murder.~Reports by Frank McGee and Dean [Brayliss] of NBC Nes on tightened security in Québec and along its borders with the U.S. and neighbouring provinces, as part of the search for the murderers of Pierre Laporte. Other developments reported include the receipt by police of a letter by James Cross, stating that he will be killed if the police move in, the issuing of arrest warrants for Paul Rose and Marc Carbonneau and the vote in Parliament on the War Measures Act.~NBC News correspondent Liz Trotta reports from Montreal about the search by police in the house in St. Hubert where Pierre Laporte is believed to have been held before his death. A police officer describes what he found in the house. Preparations for the funeral of Pierre Laporte are also mentioned. This may be a television report.~Fragment of a comment about a police theory about the death of Pierre Laporte.~Fragment of a report about the "sympathetic condemnation" in the media in France for the FLQ terrorists.~Part of a CBS news report, containing actuality of part of a speech by Richard M. Nixon while campaigning with Robert Taft Jr. Nixon emphasizes the Republican Party's opposition to campus riots and violence, making reference to the FLQ crisis and mentioning that he had talked to Prime Minister Trudeau.~Excerpt of the CBS Evening News television program, anchored by Walter Cronkite. He introduces a report by CBS news correspondent David [Culhane] about the vote in the Canadian Parliament in support of the War Measures Act, the continuing search for the killers of Pierre Laporte, the police search of the house in St. Hubert where evidence of Laporte's captivity has been found and preparations for Laporte's funeral. [Culhane's] report includes an interview by CBS reporter Bill Walker of René Lévesque, who calls the terrorists "a bunch of jerks". Cronkite reads a report on measures taken to give Canadian diplomats in the U.S. and American diplomats in Canada extra protection.~Report by Paul Cunningham of NBC News on the vote in Parliament in favour of the War Measures Act. The FLQ is referred to as the "QLF". There is a clip of Pierre Elliott Trudeau's statement about Laporte's death.~Report on plans for the laying-in state of the body of Laporte and a police search of the house in St. Hubert where Laporte is believed to have been held hostage.Language:EnglishNotes:1.
