Part one begins with tracking shots from The Pas to Fort Churchill in March 1931. The camera rolls, by train, past towns, hamlets, and snow-covered landscapes; over the Saskatchewan River, the Nelson River, and past Indian villages. Cree Indians meet the train at Owl River. Other footage shows an Inuit constable of the Chesterfield Inlet RCMP patrol building an igloo; views of Sloop Cave, Fort Prince of Wales, Cape Merry, and Inuit in the area; the Inuit constable with white RCMP patrolman, both wearing Inuit parkas departing by Inuit komatik sled; Inuit skiing and dancing to hkelele; men travelling by dog sled; others holding polar bear cubs; and a long sequence on the ice break-up and the construction of grain elevators and docks. Part two begins with the 1933 ice break-up and the arrival of the first ships: SS "Penniworth", SS "Nascopie", and SS "Brandon", among others. The SS "Farnsworth", SS "Warkworth", and SS "Sierentz" also make appearances. Exceptional material: the arrival of Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne on their way to Asia by float plane; the Lindberghs posing while their plane is refueled; a visit from the Minister of Railways and Canals, Dr. R.J.
