Interview of George Nick as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson at Nick’s Winnipeg home on the afternoon of 18 November 1978. Nick speaks about: where and when his interest in physical education began; his war service with the Royal Canadian Air Force; his early experiences with the Department of Education in Manitoba; the undergraduate degree program with the University of Toronto from 1947 to 1950; his experiences with the Manitoba Normal School; a description of the Gimli Leadership Camp; the National Fitness Act of 1943 and its effect on Manitoba programs; a discussion of the Youth Training Act of 1936 and its effect on fitness and education in Manitoba; the development of interscholastic athletics in Manitoba; the construction of school gymnasia in Manitoba during the period 1968 to 1975 and the setting of standards; curriculum development in the Manitoba school system; the evolution of the undergraduate program in physical education at the University of Manitoba and a discussion of the Manitoba Normal School; and recollections of Wray Youmans and Robert Jarman.
