Interview by Jim Green of Stan Wingfield, former seaman and educational committee member with the Canadian Seamen's Union (CSU). Wingfield talks about the Montreal waterfront taverns popular with seamen in the 1940s and how the taverns served as social meeting places for seamen to talk, exchange information about ships and plan union meetings. Wingfield also discusses details of the 1949 CSU strike when striking CSU seamen were harassed and illegally arrested by the police, beaten by "scabs", especially those hired by the rival Seafarers International Union, and ignored by the longshoremen. Some of the important aspects of Wingfield's involvement in the CSU's educational committees were to plan strategy during the strike, serve as a "flying squad" to protect CSU pickets from SIU thugs, to persuade strikebreakers to join the CSU, to identify "spies" and informers from within the CSU ranks and to solicit food, clothing and supplies from merchants sympathetic to the striking seamen. Other topics covered in the interview are a voyage to South Africa where Wingfield saw at first hand the exploitation of black workers, his socialist viewpiont and the dangerous work performed by the seamen in the ship's stokehold tending the large coal-fired furnaces and boilers.
