Militia. Dundas : During the later half of the 18th Century and the first half of the 19th Century, the military defence of the British American provinces was provided by the British Army and the local militia. Organized on a county-basis, the militia was composed of all male residents between the ages of 16 and 60, who were liable for service. In times of peace, this was limited to an annual muster and drill, but in cases of emergency of war, such portion as deemed necessary might be enrolled for the period. At various times, provisions were made for a more systematic organization and for the recruitment of volunteers, however, universal service remained the principle. The basic units of organization for the militia were the battalion, commanded by a lieutenant-colonel, and the company, commanded by a captain.Subject heading:Source:PrivateFormer archival reference no.:MG24-G60 -
