MacDonald and Werner Dettwiler. MDA got its first government contract in 1971 to provide components for a satellite ground station, followed by another contract in 1974 to construct a ground station. MDA continued work on the development of satellite ground stations and began exporting ground station facilities. MDA additionally began to work on the development of synthetic aperture radar (SAR).
In 1987, MDA was selected to become a prime contractor for Canada's participation in the International Space Station (ISS) program and design software. The same year MDA and SPAR worked together on the design of the RADARSAT-1 satellite, with MDA being responsible for the primary payload, the SAR system.
In 1992, SPAR attempted to purchase MDA for fifty million dollars in a deal which MDA rejected. MDA was then sold in 1995 to United States based Orbital Sciences Corporation for sixty seven million dollars. In 1999, MDA purchased the robotics section of SPAR Aerospace Limited; with Orbital Sciences Corporation selling its shares of MDA in an initial public offering later that year. Also in 1999, MDA acquired RADARSAT International.
In 2005, MDA acquired EMS Technologies Canada, and renamed RADARSAT International to MDA Geospatial Services International. In 2008, Alliant Techsystems Incorporated (ATK) attempts to purchase MDA, in a $1.325 billion sale which was rejected by the federal government of Canada.
