This collection consists of two oil on panel self-portraits of Siegfried Haase and one lithograph portrait of Siegfried Haase and his wife Hedwig.

Haase, Siegfried Fritz, 1916-1996 : Siegfried Fritz Haase (1916-1996) was born in Stolp, Pomerania, Germany. Haase began his artistic education in the 1930s when he enrolled in the Handelschule and at the School of Typography and Advertising in Stolp where he studied to become a commercial artist. In 1936 Haase moved to Berlin where he continued his studies at the Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst. During his time in Berlin, Haase had the opportunity to work in the studio of Käthe Kollwitz. During World War II Haase worked as a radio operator and war artist. Towards the end of the war the vast majority Haase's paintings were destroyed. Following the war, in 1952 Haase, together with his wife a two daughters, immigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia. During the period from 1952-1957 Haase worked at both the Eastern Photo Engravers and the Maritime Photo Engravers Limited. In 1964 Haase became an Associate Professor at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He taught graphic techniques, printmaking, and illustration at NSCAD until 1982 when he took partial retirement for health reasons. Haase continued to teach at NSCAD in a more limited capacity until 1984. Following his teaching career Haase moved first to Cambridge, Ontario and then to Ottawa, Ontario.

The collection was donated to Library and Archives Canada by Siegfried Haase's daughter Ingrid Haase.
