44 audio cassettes (62 h, 1 min)Language of material:EnglishScope and content:This sub-seriers comprises the textual records and sound recordings for June Callwood's 1995 book about the trial of Charles Ssenyonga for knowingly spreading the AIDS virus to six women. It includes an annotated draft of the book manuscript; interview notebooks; court and legal documents; reference material on the use of DNA evidence; correspondence with the victims and others involved in the case, including victim impact statements; and newspaper clippings covering the police case and trial. The sound recordings contain interviews with doctors, police officers, legal counsel, Ssenyonga's friends, and the women infected by Ssenyonga. There is evidence of some erasure of extremely graphic or sensitive portions of the sound recordings, which are sometimes still found in the notebooks. Much of this material will remain closed to protect the anonymity of the victims and prevent correlation of pseudonyms with actual identities.
The sub-series also holds reviews and articles about the book, statements of royalties, and correspondence with Louise Dennys and others at Alfred A. Knopf publishing house. Correspondence with Peter von Puttkamer of Gryphon Productions concerns optioning the book for film, while a letter from Grit Laskin enclose lyrics for his song about the Ssenyonga trial. There are also two draft manuscripts of the book in electronic form.Source:PrivateFormer archival reference no.:MG31-K24Other accession no.:2005-0102 VSA -
