In 1918 the Forestry Branch began a long-running (until 1973) research program at the Lac Edouard Experimental Forest in the Mauricie region. In 1933 the Forestry Branch established its first headquarters in Quebec with an office on the Valcartier Military Base. On land that would later be known as the Valcartier Forest Station, the first fire detection system was developed. Meanwhile, the Forest Biology Section was working out of offices in Department of Agriculture buildings in Berthierville. In 1960 both units moved to a new facility near the Université Laval in Sainte-Foy: the Laurentian Forest Research Laboratory, with the responsibility of the biology section moving from Agriculture to the Forestry branch soon after. The centre was expanded and its research facilities increased in 1985 and the name changed to the Laurentian Forestry Centre (LFC).
The LFC is one of five regional research and development centres maintained by the Canadian Forest Service (CFS). Although each province is responsible for managing its forest resources, the CFS addresses national and international issues affecting Canada's forests as a whole. In addition to contributing to the service-wide research initiatives, the LFC manages the Forest Biology Program and the Forest Ecosystems Program. The fonds includes his research on the development of the biological insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.), used to control spruce budworm populations in North American forests.Container note(s):1018 : volume numbers added as part of COC migration
