At various times from the early 1880s to 1949 the duties of the Surveyor General have been performed from administrative positions equal to that of a director of a branch, chief of a service and chief of a division. For this same period of time the correspondence of the Surveyor General, regardless of his administrative standing, was placed in a straight numeric registry system. This registry incorporates material created between 1881 and 1949, although certain items placed with these registry records fall outside these dates. Some of the files have been screened and stripped of routine subject matter.
A wide variety of subjects are covered in these files. For example: surveyors' files (Such files, one for each survey season, usually consist of letters of instruction, progress reports from the field, the report of the Inspector General of Surveys, and the final survey report. The survey report can also be found in the published annual report of the Surveyor General.), aerial surveying, details of changes to the Dominion Land Surveys Act, costs of surveys and instruments used in surveying, and the progress of boundary surveys.
Those survey records relating to lands transferred under the resource transfer agreements of 1930 were transferred to the provinces involved in the 1950s by the Legal Surveys and Aeronautical Charts Division. A file list prepared at the time of this transfer and available in the Government Archives Division helps to identify the final disposition of these records.Additional information:Source of title:Title based on contents of the sub-series.Related material:Related material can be found in the Index sub-series of the same series (135033). Many of the cartographical items have been removed from the files in Volumes 330 to 402 and are now in the custody of the Cartographic and Architectural Archives Division.Container note(s):535 : originally part of vol.300Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG88-A-I-a -
