Scope and content:Sub-series consists of operational and administrative records which originated with the Rideau Canal Office at Smiths Falls and include water level and water control records, operational files from the "Canal Services" 4000-block of the Department of Transport's file classification system, engineering contract files, realty service site licences, and a wide range of administrative and operational Parks Canada central registry files.
Scope and content of cartographic, architectural and technical drawings is as follows:
RG84M 745-30246 consists of plans used during the construction and improvement of the Rideau Canal, dated 1818-1955.
RG84M 86703-30 consists of Rideau Canal survey plans of area between Bytown and Kingston Mills, Ont., dated 1851-1853.
RG84M 934013 consists of plans of repairs and renovations to the Pretoria Avenue bridge, Ottawa, dated 1947-1993, predominant 1947-1977.
RG84M 934013 consists of drawings prepared by the following firms: Rideau Canal Office, Dept. of Transport; Dominion Bridge Co. Ltd.; City of Ottawa Planning and Works Dept.; Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton Roads Dept.; and C.C. Parker and Associates Limited, for the Dept. of Indian and Northern Affairs. The original of the profile of the Rideau Canal system was prepared on 15 March 1929, in the Chief Engineers office.Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Canadian Parks Service. Rideau Canal Office : The Rideau Canal Office is located in Smiths Falls, Ontario. Constructed over a five year period from 1826 to 1832 by the Royal Engineers and a host of Irish labourers, the Rideau Canal was initially designed to serve as a military route linking Montreal to Kingston on Lake Ontario. Covering a distance of some 200 kilometres and comprised of 47 locks, the canal served no useful military purpose, although commercial traffic made use of the waterway through to the World War I period. Increasingly devoted to tourism and designated as a historical site in 1926, the canal is presently used for recreational purposes. Federal responsibility for the maintenance of the Rideau Canal was assigned to the Department of Railways and Canals from 1879 to 1936 and the Department of Transport from 1936 to 1972 . The administrative responsibility for the Rideau Canal and five other historically significant canal systems was transferred from the Department of Transport, to the then National Parks Service in 1972.Finding aid:Technical drawing; cartographic material; architectural drawing (Paper) RG84M 745/30246: Finding aid consists of a detailed item listing. These plans are mainly of lock stations, ordnance lands, bridges as well as various profiles and cross sections relating to diverse aspects of canal building and maintenance. They also include some ship plans pertaining to "Tug Loretta", "Dredge Rideau" and other ferry scows.
RG84M 86703/30: Plans include tables of land acreage surveyed and reference tables of Ordnance boundaries, building materials, and road allowances. Except for a few numbers mentioned on index cards, items #1-303 were transferred from the Property Office of the Rideau Canal, Ontario Region, Parks Canada. The remaining items were transferred from the Engineering Section of the Rideau Canal Office, Parks Canada.
RG84M 86703/30: Transferred in Nov. 1986 from the Ontario Region office of Parks Canada in Cornwall.
