Biography/Administrative history:Canadian Surface Transportation Administration : In 1919, a Highways Branch was established within the Department of Railways and Canals to supervise the construction of highways in the provinces, which were being built with federal grants. The subsidies were to be given for only five years but that was eventually extended. The Highways Branch was in existence from 1919-1928 and its function of collecting statistics on motor vehicle registration and the tourist trade were transferred to the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in 1928. With the establishment of the Department of Transport in 1936, there was no specific branch or department to administer roads. It was not until 1965-66, when the Transportation Policy and Research Branch was formed with the amalgamation of the Railway and Highway Branch and Economic Studies Branch. The Canadian Surface Transportation Administration, as it was redesignated in 1970, set surface transportation policy; implemented and monitored all activities involving railways, highways, urban roads, and road safety; monitored motor vehicle traffic regulation, the transportation of dangerous goods, and ferry transportation services. In 1985, the Canadian Surface Transportation Administration was renamed as Surface Group and lost control over the construction and improvement of highways, certain coastal steamship and ferry services, and rail passenger services. In return, there was to be a new focus on monitoring safety regulations within the national transportation system, especially for the transportation of dangerous goods, road and railway safety, surface transportation emergency planning and motor vehicle regulations.Finding aid:(Electronic) Finding aid 12-1 is a computer generated box list relating to volumes 2835, 2847-2848. 12-1(Electronic) Finding aid 12-2 is a computer generated file list relating to volumes 2835, 2847-2848. 12-2(Electronic) Finding aid 12-23 is a computer generated box list relating to volumes 4697-4724, 4787-4834. 12-23(Electronic) Finding aid 12-25 is a computer generated file list relating to volumes 5000-5013, 5078-5079. 12-25(Electronic) Finding aid 12-95 is a computer generated file list relating to volumes 5152-5176. 12-95(Electronic) Finding aid 12-149 is a computer generated file list relating to volumes 5440-5512, 5532-5561. 12-149(Electronic) Finding aid 12-182 is a computer generated file list relating to volumes 4255-4300, 4487-4676, 4835-4982.Finding aid 12-182 is a computer generated file list relating to volumes 4255-4300, 4487-4676, 4835-4982.Finding aid 12-182 is a computer generated file list relating to volumes 4255-4300, 4487-4676, 4835-4982.Finding aid 12-182 is a computer generated file list relating to volumes 4255-4300, 4494-4676, 4956-4982. 12-182Technical drawing; cartographic material (Paper) Finding aid consists of an itemized list.
