Gonthier, Charles Doherty, 1928-2009 : Né à Montréal le 1er août 1928, Charles D. Gonthier, fils de Georges Gonthier et de Kathleen Doherty fait ses études à l'école Garneau à Ottawa et au Collège Loyola. En 1947, il entreprend ses études universitaires au Collège Stanislas de Montréal (B.A.) qui à l'époque, relevait d'un réseau de collèges français. En 1951, il obtient un baccalauréat (B.C.L.) de l'Université McGill. Il est admis au Barreau en 1952 et il exerce sa profession d'avocat à Montréal avec le cabinet Hackett, Mulvena & Laverty (1952-1957), le cabinet Hugessen, Macklaier, Chisholm, Smith & Davis puis, avec le cabinet Laing, Weldon, Courtois, Clarkson, Parsons, Gonthier & Tétrault (1957-1974). Il est nommé Conseiller de la Reine en 1971. Entre 1959 et 1969, il est membre du conseil du Bureau d'aide juridique de Montréal, président du Jeune Barreau de Montréal (1960-1961), président de la section des jeunes avocats de l'Association du Barreau canadien (1961-1962) et membre du conseil d'administration du Barreau de Montréal.
Entre 1963 à 1974, il est désigné secrétaire de la division du Québec de l'Association du Barreau canadien, membre du comité du droit du contrat d'entreprise de l'Office de révision du Code civil et membre du comité de discipline du Barreau du Québec. Il est nommé juge à la Cour supérieure du Québec le 17 octobre 1974.
En 1983, il obtient le poste de président de la Commission des juges nationaux de la première conférence mondiale sur l'indépendance de la justice à Montréal. Parallèlement à ces activités, il préside en 1984, le Conseil d'administration du Collège Stanislas et en 1976, il est membre du conseil d'administration du Musée McCord d'histoire canadienne. Il a également joué un rôle important au sein de la magistrature canadienne. Entre 1986 et 1987, il préside l'Institut canadien d'administration de la justice et devient président de la Conférence canadienne des juges de 1988 à 1989. Il est nommé juge à la Cour d'appel du Québec le 24 mai 1988 et juge puisné de la Cour suprême du Canada le 1er février 1989. Il prend sa retraite le 1er août 2003. Après cette date, il retourne à la pratique privée comme avocat-conseil au sein de la firme McCarthy-Tétrault à Montréal. Parallèlement, il est nommé président du Conseil d'administration du Centre du droit international et du développement durable à la Faculté de droit de l'Université McGill. En 2006, M. Gonthier est nommé commissaire du Centre de la sécurité des télécommunications. Au cours de sa carrière, il a participé à de nombreux congrès nationaux et internationaux. Il est décédé le 17 juillet 2009.
Durant sa carrière, il a reçu plusieurs grades et titres honorifiques. Il a été nommé Chevalier de l'Ordre des palmes académiques de France en 1988. Il a reçu un doctorat honoris causa de l'Université McGill en 1990 et il détient le titre de Wainwright Senior Research Fellow. Il a été nommé compagnon de l'Ordre du Canada le 3 mai 2007. Gontier est décédé le 17 uillet 2009.
En 2011, une bourse de recherche a été créée en son honneur par l'Institut canadien d'administration de la justice. Par la suite, l'Université McGill, l'Université de Montréal et l'Institut canadien d'administration de la justice organisent conjointement une conférence nationale et un site Internet à sa mémoire.
