Muir's work in the Canadian civil service: with the Ammunition Branch, Department of Defence Production (1951-1963), and as a Director of Canadian Arsenals Ltd.; as Small Business Adviser, Department of Industry (1963-1966); and as Director, Quality Management Branch, Department of Defence Production (1966-1969) and later Department of Supply and Services (1969-1972). Also included are related personal interests and study.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Muir, Clare L., fl. 1951-1972 : Clare L. Muir, civil servant, joined the Department of Defence Production in November 1951 as an administrator in the Ammunition Branch. From 1956 until 1963, he was Director of the Ammunition Branch (from 1961 re-titled the Armament Branch). He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Canadian Arsenals Limited, from 1962-1969.
In 1963, the Department of Industry was established with responsibility for fostering the efficient development of the Canadian manufacturing industry. C.L. Muir served as the Small Business Adviser for the Department of Industry from 1963 until 1966.
Beginning in 1966, the responsibility for the central purchasing and supply function in the federal government was assumed by the Department of Defence Production. Muir became Director of the newly created Quality Management Branch in the the Department of Defence Production. In 1969, the Department was reorganized as the Department of Supply and Services. Muir served as the Quality Management Branch Director until his retirement in 1972.Additional information:General note:Acquired in 1993 from Clare L.
