2 albums (drawings).Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of files related to correspondence, 1896, 1900-1935; subject files, 1863-1936, some photocopy; D'Arcy McGee, 1863-1868; photocopy, 1869, transcript, 1856-1919; speeches, and tributes, 1889-1936.
The fonds contains a bound volume of Canadian "Inaugural flight Cachets" containing 170 illustrations, including original hand-stamp impressions and published facsimiles of first flight envelope cashets.
The fonds also includes photographs of parliament buildings and shots of Parliament Hill, Ottawa, 1916; the Parliament Building, Winnipeg, Manitoba, n.d.; politicians, n.d., [ca. 1868]; a customs warehouse, n.d.; and Connaught Ranges - V. Fitzroy Bridge, 1916. There is also a booklet of photographs about agriculture in Temiskaming, 1910.
Included in the fonds are prints including drawings in House of Commons, Canada, published in Illustrated London News, July 7, 1905, work probably by Melton Prior.; political cartoon entitled "The Seven Sleepers Must Get Out!"; and street scenes of Montreal: "St. Maurice Street," "The Old-Time Bookstore," "18th Century Houses" and "Houses of Two Centuries Ago," works by Paul Archibald Caron (1874-1941).
The fonds also contains two paintings by Cornelius Krieghoff, [ca. 1850]: "Un P'tit; and "View of a game of cards; as well as a painting of Hon. Thomas D'Arcy McGee done from life, 1867, by Ottawa portrait painter, Denis J. Hurley (active 1867-1884).
In addition, the fonds includes 2 albums of preliminary drawings for the resconstruction of the Parliament Buildings.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Murphy, Charles, ca. 1863-1935 : Charles Murphy, born in 1862 at Ottawa, Ont., received his education from the University of Ottawa, B.A., and Osgoode Hall. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1891 and practised law at Ottawa. He was a Liberal Member of the House of Commons representing Russell, Ont., 1908-1925, serving as Member of the Privy Council, 1908, Secretary of State, 1908-1911, and Postmaster General, 1921-1926. He was a Member of the Senate from 1925 until 1935.
