Sir Robert Southwell (1635-1702) was born on 31 December 1635 at Battin Warwick on the River Bandon, near Kinsale, Ireland. He was the eldest son of Robert Southwell (1607-1677) of Kinsale, by his wife Helena, only daughter and heiress of Major Robert Gore of Shereton, Wiltshire. He was educated at Queen's College, Oxford, and entered Lincoln's Inn in 1654. He went into the diplomatic service and was English envoy in Portugal, 1665-1668. After further diplomatic work he retired temporarily until the accession of William III. After the Revolution, he was made a commissioner of customs, 1689-1697, and became principal secretary of state for Ireland, 1690-1702. On 1 December 1690, he was elected president of the Royal Society and held that office for five successive years. He died, 11 September 1702, at King's Weston and was buried at Henbury, Gloucestershire.Additional information:General note:Documents created in: King's Weston, Gloucestershire, England.Custodial history:Additional Manuscripts 9764 is a folio volume containing various official papers relative to shipping and trade, 1664-1702, which derive from Sir Robert Southwell (1635-1702), Commissioner of Customs, 1689-1697, and William Blathwayt ([1649]-1717), Commissioner of Trade, 1696-1706. It was added to the holdings of the British Museum (now the British Library) in 1834.
