He was promoted major, Hompesch's Hussars in 1795, lieutenant-colonel of the 60th Foot in 1797, and colonel in 1805. He served in Ireland, was present at the capture of Surinam and commanded the Light Infantry at the attack on Walcheren Island, 1809, and the siege of Flushing. In 1808, he was promoted brigadier-general and in 1810 took command of the garrison at Quebec with the rank of major-general. He commanded the Montreal District, 1812, Upper Canada, 1813, and the Left Division of the Army, 1813-1814 and administrator in Upper Canada, 19 June to 13 December 1813. Returning to England in 1815 he was knighted in 1818 and promoted to lieutenant-general in 1819.
