The fonds consists of microfilmed material including correspondence, 1852-1918, 12 reels; journals and notebooks, 1853-1917, 4 reels; memoranda and notes, general and relating to Sir Henry Solomon Wellcome, 1878-1923, 1 reel; printed material and speeches relating to missionary activities and Sir Henry Wellcome, 1867-1911, 2 reels; community and business material, concerning such subjects as salmon cannery, community customs, municipal records, civil office - justice of the peace, and Indian affairs, 1857-1916, 1945, 3 reels; and financial and legal papers including store, church, sawmill and general ledgers, contracts and financial records, 1853-1934, 4 reels. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels M-2315 to M-2334.

Duncan, William, 1832-1918 : William Duncan went to Fort Simpson as a missionary in 1857. In 1862 he established the Metlakahtla Christian Mission in Northern British Columbia under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society but in 1881 the connection was broken due to poor relations. In 1887, relations with the Dominion and Provincial governments also deteriorated and the mission moved to Annette Island in Alaska. Duncan remained in full charge of the mission until his death in 1918 amid jurisdictional disputes with the United States Government. Sir Henry Solomon Wellcome was a close friend of Duncan and acted as trustee after his death. Encyclopedia Canadiana, Vol. 3, p. 315.

Records relating to official mission business and the personal affairs of its leader have been kept together due to the fact that the mission was so much Duncan's own creation.
