Painting of "Queen Victoria Laying a wreath on the coffin of Sir John Thompson at Windsor Castle, Dec. 13, 1894", which is also known as "The Queen's Tribute". Work by Frederic Marlett Bell-Smith, 1895-1896. Included in the painting are portraits of Sir Charles Tupper, Mrs. W. E. Sanford and her 2 daughters, Lord Edward Pelham-Clinton, Master of the Royal Household, Lady Southampton and Maids of Honour, Hafiz Abdul Karim, C. E. I., the Queen's Indian Secretary, General Sir Henry Ponsonby, the Queen's Private Secretary, Sir James Reid, M. D., Sir Fleetwood Edwards, and others who are identified in an accompanying booklet. Sir John Thompson (1845-1894) died at Windsor Castle on December 12, 1894, of a heart attack.
This work has been conserved for the Prime Ministers' exhibition held at the National Archives of Canada in 1994. From the 1940s to 1979, it had been stored under poor conditions, and had become badly damaged.
The work is one of three paintings executed by Bell-Smith concerning Sir John Thompson's death and funeral. "The Arrival of the Blenheim at Halifax" was destroyed in the Parliament Building fire of 1916. (See R13133-50; C-141174, MIKAN 2954644 for a black and white photographic reproduction of this destroyed painting). The location of the 3rd painting, "The Funeral of Sir John Thompson in St. Mary's Cathedral," was not known for many years. In 1998, however, the Archives purchased this painting from Bell-Smith's descendants. See accession 1998-022.
