Fonds consists of photographs which exemplify Orests' concentration on the people and places of Alberta. Subjects include: Byzantine Churches, Ukrainian Orthodox Churches, Farmer's Market, views of the prairies and rural towns, Japanese Buddhist Monks, Queen Elizabeth's visit to Vegreville in 1978, Basilian Fathers, grain elevators, court houses, the Reverend Seraphim Filminoff. There are also rural and urban scenes in various places in Canada other than Alberta.

Semchishen, Orest, 1932- : Orest Semchishen was born at Mundare, just east of Edmonton, in 1932. Orest was initially a radiologist, who later became interested in photography while working as an intern at the Montreal General Hospital. He later moved to Calgary, and there continued his interest in photography and joined a photo club. After re-locating to Edmonton in the mid-1960s he continued his camera club work, but later became disenchanted with this style, which was mainly in the 35mm format camera. In the early 1970s, after suggestions that he concentrate on a particular subject, Orest purchased a 4x5 camera and began to take photographs of Byzantine churches in Alberta. He began taking courses with Hubert Hohn, an art photographer teaching at the University of Alberta and began to concentrate more profitably on photography. His first major exhibition was at the Edmonton Art Gallery in 1976.
