Series consists of reference material from the former Canadian National Railways library. The library opened in 1961 at CN headquarters at Montreal and was accessible to all CN employees. Due to a lack of space and need for profitability, the library was reduced in size a few times and moved into smaller premises. Its last location was 1060 Belmont Street in Montreal. For the same reasons, CN decided to finally close the library in 1998-99. Included in this series is material created and/or maintained by Canadian National Railways, including, photographs, maps, charts, speeches, directories, a sound recording, research reports, and publicity magazines and pamphlets. Also included in this series are technical research reports published by the Technical Research Branch, Operational Research and Industrial Engineering Branch, and Research and Development Department (See vols. 155517-15521 and 15528-15534). Also included in this series are various CN newsletters published for employees, including Operations East Newsletter, Transcona Shops Newsletter, Flash News, CN Reporter/Nouvelles (vol. 15523) and CNR Personnel Bulletin and Pensioner's News (15534). There is also an index to Donald Gordon's scrapbook. Information about these and other materials can also be found in the lower-level sub-series descriptions, particularly the sub-series entitled Marketing, publicity and miscellaneous reports.
